Hard Drive Recovery: How to Recover Data from Hard Drive

My parents had my old iMac. Unfortunately they were not backing it up and somehow file vault was enabled. Is there anyway to recover this data? The local guys did not think they could do this.  She really only wants her old pictures. I am not sure what is wrong with the computer if that makes a difference. I seem to remember it was a problem with the screen going out.
Thanks for any help.

According to the result of previous research on the reasons of hard drive data loss, we have the conclusion as follows:
1. Empty recycle bin or Trash.
2. Mistakenly format hard drive without backup.
3. Lose data after system restore.
4. Made a wrong operation on the existing partitions after installing a new operation system (like Mac OS X in Windows, or Windows in Mac OS X.
5. The hard drive is logically corrupted or crashed, unable to access the data or files.
6. The partition table is corrupted or damaged.
7. Hard drive becomes inaccessible due to virus inflection.

However, it is obviously that there are some other unfound factors causing hard drive data loss. So it is of vital importance for us to pay attention to protecting data.
